TV antennas are devices that receive and transmit signals from broadcasting companies, and bring you your television shows. TV antennas may seem very complicated to the average person, but they all follow the basic rules of TV signal reception.
Outdoor TV antennas are, in general, better at receiving signals than indoor TV antennas. This is because outdoor TV antennas can view the transmitting station better. Less of the signal is lost because there are fewer buildings and household appliances for it to pass through. Aside from that, outdoor TV antennas are also less prone to receive reflected ghost signals from other structures.
Of course, the higher the antenna is placed, the better. The signal can directly make its way to the antenna without coming up against obstacles. This makes the signal clearer. The antenna should be at least four feet above the roof line, or the structure that it's mounted on.
Just as higher is better, it is also helpful if the antenna is placed on the side of the building that is closest to the transmitter. If you can't put the antenna up on the roof, then the side of the building that's facing the transmitter will do.
Bigger is also better; larger antennas receive more signal. Larger antennas are important for receiving channels that need longer wavelengths to transmit. The good thing with large antennas is that they are directional, which means that they only get their signal from one direction.
Most people don't understand the value of this, but large, directional TV antennas can reduce the ghosting from reflected signals, making it easier for your TV antenna to get only the signals that you need at higher quality.
The antenna that you decide to buy will be based on your needs. In general, though, the best ones are large, outdoor directional TV antennas. If you are installing one on your roof, remember that the type of frame, mounting, and other factors that determine how well your antenna will function.
